Furniture can look convincingly like solid wood without actually being made from solid lumber throughout. A table, dresser or cabinet may combine solid wood with veneer, plywood, MDF, particleboard or even a printed wood-look surface.

6. Check for Veneer Seams or Edge Banding
Next, examine the border between the face and edge of the panel.
A veneered surface may reveal:
- a very thin wood layer at the edge;
- a different substrate beneath the surface;
- an unusually straight boundary between materials;
- edge banding with grain that does not continue naturally from the face;
- a small seam where the edge covering meets the main surface.
Use good lighting and inspect the piece from several angles.
High-quality veneer work can be extremely difficult to detect because the edges and seams may be deliberately concealed. That is why this test works best in combination with your inspection of end grain and hidden surfaces.
Damage can sometimes expose a substrate too, but do not deliberately chip, cut or sand furniture simply to identify its construction.
7. Consider the Weight—but Do Not Rely on It

It is not a reliable test.
Weight varies considerably between wood species and between furniture designs. Engineered materials can also be surprisingly heavy. MDF in particular can produce substantial weight in larger furniture pieces.
Likewise, a relatively light piece is not automatically made from cheap or artificial materials.

ask:
- Is the tabletop solid wood?
- Are the doors solid wood or veneered?
- What are the drawer fronts made from?
- Is there MDF beneath the veneer?
- Are the cabinet sides plywood, MDF or solid wood?
- What material is used for the back panel?

- Which specific parts are solid wood?
This avoids ambiguity in broad descriptions.
